About The Horse & Groom
Early Days
The H and G sits at The Cross - the crossroads at the top end of Wivenhoe.
This was the junction where the roads between Colchester, Brightlingsea and Wivenhoe converged. A prominent position for a public house.
The earliest historical records for the Horse and Groom show that the pub was originally known as the King's Arms. It first started trading in 1772.

A Family Affair
Simon and Dosh Smith, took over the Horse and Groom from Harry and Bess in March 1989.
Both Simon and Dosh were already well-known in Wivenhoe, having run The Station pub for 6 years.
In 2018, their daughter Emily joined them in the running of the pub.
Sadly, on the 21st November 2018 Simon passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dosh and Emily are now partners and continue to run The Horse & Groom.
